First Diploma Examination in Russian Language Successfully Conducted – 17/08/2025
The first batch of students in the Professional Diploma in Russian Language successfully completed their examination on 17th August 2025. The exam was conducted online under the joint supervision of the Ural State University of Economics, Russia, and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. To mark this significant milestone, an Orientation Programme was held prior to the examination with the participation of Senior Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Gamini Weerasinghe, Head of the Department of Economics, FHSS, Rasika Jayasinghe, Associate Coordinator of the Russian Language Center, FHSS, Bazhenova Oksana, Head of the International Cooperation Department, Ashura Gurbanova, Chairman of the Examination Committee, Khan Alexander, Teacher of the Preparatory Faculty for foreign citizens and Popova Nadezhda, Specialist of the International Cooperation Department.
Addressing the students, Senior Professor Shirantha Heenkenda highlighted the transformative power of language learning, stating that language is more than just a tool of communication, but a bridge between cultures, economies, and people. He emphasized that by studying Russian, students are opening doors to one of the world’s most influential languages spoken by over 250 million people across Eurasia and beyond. He further noted that in today’s era of international collaboration, Russian continues to play a vital role in diplomacy, science, engineering, literature, and trade, while mastery of the language provides access to rich cultural traditions and creates pathways to new opportunities in education, business, and global partnerships. Professor Heenkenda also reminded students that the Diploma Examination is not merely about grammar or vocabulary, but a comprehensive assessment of comprehension skills, communication ability, and cultural awareness. Assuring the students of full support from faculty, instructors, and academic staff, he encouraged them to make the best use of available resources such as study guides, workshops, and interactive learning opportunities. He concluded by reminding them that success in the diploma is not only about obtaining a certificate but about acquiring a lifelong skill that empowers them to build meaningful careers, strengthen Sri Lanka’s ties with Russia, and broaden their intellectual and cultural horizons.
Joining the event virtually, Professor Roman Krasnov, Vice Rector of the Ural State University of Economics, extended his best wishes to the students. He congratulated them for their courage in taking up the challenge of learning Russian, considered one of the most difficult languages in the world, and acknowledged their achievement in reaching this milestone. He expressed confidence in their success, noting that this examination represents the first tangible outcome of the joint project between the two universities. On behalf of the Rector, he reaffirmed the university’s strong commitment to supporting and expanding the initiative, describing the event as an important milestone and expressing hope for the continued growth and success of the program.
Before sitting for the examination, the students also shared their experiences during the programme, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of learning Russian and discussing their future career plans. They expressed special appreciation to Mr. Alexander, their teacher throughout the year, for his dedication and guidance, and conveyed their gratitude to both universities for initiating a programme that has created new pathways for their academic and professional success.
