Rajagala Archaeological Project

The provision of Archaeological Services of the Rajagala Archaeological Reserve has been handed over to the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura by an agreement signed between the Director General of Archaeology of the Department of Archaeology and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. As such the entire project would be managed by the academic members of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University.

The project activities will be directed by a team of Academic Members of the Department History and Archaeology. Prof. P. B. Mandawala who is an eminent Chartered Architect/ Architectural Conservator/Archaeologist/Heritage Manager of Sri Lanka who has over 31 years of field experience works as the head of the team which consists of Prof. Pathamasiri Kannangara, Prof. Karunasena Hettiarchchi, Dr. Alexander Kapukotuwa and Senior Lecturer Ven. Damdara Amila Thero . As such the partners of the project will be Department of Archaeology and the University Sri Jayewardenepura.



Revitalizing the ancient character of ancient Ariyakara Viharaya at Rrajagala archaeological reserve to a forest monastery for the use and enjoyment of the present and future societies.



To preserve the architectural remains and the cultural landscapes Rajagala as an ancient meditation forest monastery and as a site of archaeological importance and develop it to a spiritual and ethical Development Centre.
