DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND LINGUISTICS
The Department of English and Linguistics is one of the most outstanding departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the youngest but of the best in terms of its academic and professional credentials as a department, and has been home to many teachers, writers and scholars of English literature and language within the country and beyond.

I warmly welcome you all to the webpage of the Department of English and Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.
Our Department is a unique and inspiring place to learn, grow, and thrive. Spearheaded by Madam Parvathi Nagasundaram, it was founded in 1997. As the Department celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2027, we are humbly proud of the journey we have made so far and excited about the future that lies ahead.
Since our inception, we have produced many outstanding professionals and scholars who are making valuable contributions both in Sri Lanka and abroad. We have always been an English Department that rejects the elitist and discriminatory identity often associated with the English language in Sri Lanka. Instead, we embrace a more pragmatic and realistic view of English as a language that empowers individuals and creates opportunities.
Our undergraduate programmes—B.A. (Hons) in English and B.A. (Hons) in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language)—together with our postgraduate programmes, are designed to produce not only successful professionals and accomplished scholars but also confident, compassionate, and thoughtful individuals who never second-guess themselves.

This offers the students the opportunity of reading for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. First, students are admitted to the general degree programme. If they meet the required entry criteria for the special degree (specified under Qualifying requirements) after their first year examination, they will be able…
This is only offered as a special degree. However, students who fail to meet the entry criteria to follow the TESL degree after their first year examination have the opportunity to read for the B.A in English general degree.
