The inauguration ceremony for the first intake of the Certificate curse in Tourism conducts by the Department of Anthropology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was held on 4th April 2021 at the reading hall, of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences graced the event as the chief guest. Prof. Chamali Nahallage; Head of the Department of Anthropology, Snr. Prof. Yasanjali Devika Jayatilleke; Course Coordinator of Certificate in Tourism, Prof. Praneeth Abheyasundara, Dr. Jayantha Jayasiri, Dr. Sepala Samarasekara, Dr. Raveendra Withanachchi, and Dr. Tharaka Ananda participated in the event as the academicians from the same department. Besides, heads of departments representing other departments of the faculty, academic and non-academic staff members were also participated in the inauguration ceremony.
Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya; Paediatric Neurologist glorified the occasion by delivering the keynote speech. Mr. Donald Rajapaksha; Tourist Board, Sri Lanka, Dr. Prasanna Ranabahu; Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, Mr. Hasantha Wijethunga; the President of Young Zoologists’ Association of Sri Lanka and two students of the course addressed the gathering on several themes related to the tourism field. Further, this ceremony was ornated with traditional drumming and traditional dancing events.
The certificate course in tourism initiated by the department of anthropology is the first of its kind that was launched by the National University of Sri Lanka to empower the professionals employed in the tourism industry.
The first intake of the course consists of fifty students and will be commenced from the 24th of April 2021 via ZOOM technology.
