Inauguration ceremony of the Diploma in English offered by the Department of English Language Teaching was held on the 11th of June 2019 in the reading hall of the Sumangala building. This optional diploma is offered to the second year students of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura enabling them to continue their English after the first year 300 hour long English course. One of the remarkable features of this program is that this is open to all the second year students across all faculties of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The course has been designed in a manner that it also offers an exit point whereby those intending to leave early can earn a Certificate in English after completing 225 hours of face to face teaching. Those students who successfully complete the Certificate in English course and wish to further enhance their proficiency in the target language can continue up to Diploma level and complete the course after covering a total of 450 hours of face to face interactions.
This course will fulfill the growing demand for a Diploma in English from a wide range of undergraduates who are aware of the demands of the market and therefore wish to enhance their command of the target language and thereby increase their employment prospects both locally as well as overseas. Moreover, those who complete this course will be more confident to take international exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, etc. and sit for professional courses conducted by local and international institutions. Above all, this course is aligned with the University Test of English Language (UTEL) level five. Hence, those who complete this course will be able to take UTEL exam too.
