The Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized a one-day field visit to historical sites in Kandy, for the 2nd year History (Honours) Degree undergraduates related to their course unit on ‘Kandyan Period of Sri Lanka (HIS 2233)’, on the 15th of September 2023.
Under the guidance of the Head of the Department of History and Archaeology, Sen. Lect. (Ven.) Dambara Amila Thero, Prof. Pathmasairi Kannangara, Sen.Lect. U.N.K. Rathnayaka and Lect. Damith Ranagala of the same department coordinated this field visit for the students. Accordingly, the students visited Hindagala Rajamaha Viharaya, Lewella Gangarama Rajamaha Viharaya, Degaldoruwa Rajamaha Viharaya and Galmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya in the morning half. After having lunch, the group visited Ambekke Devalaya, Lankathilake Rajamaha Viharaya and Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya.
In contrast to the university classroom context, the students were offered an opportunity for experiential education and hands-on learning via the field visit, in which they learned about history, iconography, architecture, mural paintings, arts and crafts, intangible cultural activities and so on. Hence, the Department of History and Archaeology would like to thank the Vice-Chancellor of the USJ, Sen. Prof. Padmalal M. Manage and the Dean of the FHSS, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda as well, for making the necessary arrangements to realize this field visit, to enhance the level of the teaching and learning process of our undergraduates.
