Undergraduates of the Department of History and Archaeology represented at ‘Uruma Samiksha-2023’, an Archaeological workshop and exhibition conducted by the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies

Upon the invitation of the Department of Applied Archaeology of the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS), the undergraduates of the Department of History and Archaeology, USJ represented at ‘Uruma Samiksha-2023’, an archaeological workshop and exhibition, organized in parallel to the National Archaeology Day, at the NIIBS premises, on 4th, 5th and 6th of July 2023.

Accordingly, the undergraduates of our department conducted a practical awareness session on the process of taking stampages from stone inscriptions, during the entire event. In addition, this event consisted of numerous practical awareness sessions such as preparing ola-leaf manuscripts, traditional paintings, brass work, stone carvings, etc. conducted by the Replica School of the Central Cultural Fund and other institutions. Furthermore, various artifcats had been exhibited as galleries and mobile museums by the Department of National Museums, while replicas and book stalls had also been installed by different instituions for the enthusiasts. This event was participated by the archaeology and other undergraduates from the Universities of Jaffna, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, and Moratuwa, and hundreds of school children from different areas of the country. Therefore, the undergraduates of the Department of History and Archaeology were able to acquire novel experiences and exposure during the entire event.

The Department of History and Archaeology would like to thank Prof. P.B. Mandawala, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Nāgānanda International Institute for Buddhist Studies (NIIBS) and their Department of Applied Archaeology for the opportunity provided for the undergraduates of our department.
