The Publication Committee of Humanities and Social Sciences faculty hosted the first ‘Faculty Publication Day’ event on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. Under the vision and guidance of the Dean of the faculty Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, excellent creative skills of academic staff, non-academic staff and undergraduates of the faculty were appreciated in the event. Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage – Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and veteran writer Mr Chulananda Samaranayake attended the event as distinguished chief guests. The main objective of the ‘Faculty Publication Day’ was to appraise the creative writing skills of the faculty members.
In this unprecedented event, two significant books were released as faculty publications. ‘Disi Vidasi’ – a collection of poems written by the undergraduates of the faculty to alleviate their stress while quarantined at home during the COVID – 19 pandemic. The other book published at the event was entitled as ‘Ranrasu Nirmana Sangrahaya’ – a collection of award-winning short stories and poems at the ‘Ranrasu Prathibha’ Arts Festival held in 2019.
In addition to these two faculty publications, over 25 books published by lecturers of the faculty were also prized at the event. Furthermore, books comprising scholarly articles edited by the academic staff of the faculty, articles and books written by the undergraduates were also appraised at this occasion.
Marking a significant milestone in the history of Sri Lankan universities, it was also announced that ‘Vidudaya Vinivida Kathana Grantha’ project, launched by the faculty has published more than 250 audiobooks for students with special needs. In particular, this audiobook project is another unique community outreach program conducted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
