A Japanese Cultural Workshop was organized by the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on Thursday, 12th January 2023 inviting Ms. Reina Murasawa and Shoki Kuyama from Japan. This was a co-curricular activity for the students who have registered for JPN 2113 Pre- Intermediate Japanese Reading and Writing. And JPN 2123 Pre- Intermediate Japanese Listening and Speaking. The objective of the program was to promote cultural awareness and to experience and understand Japanese way of thinking through food and traditional culture. The students gave a guided tour to the Japanese visitors and this surely helped them improve their communicative skills in Japanese. The dancing section of our department presented our visitors an opportunity to experience traditional dancing. The two visitors participated with lots of passion.
After the tour everybody participated in making Kreepan (curry bread), which is a very common savory food in Japan. Dr. Dhammika Weerathunga from the Faculty of Applied Linguistics helped us a lot to make Kareepan. Reina who is very passionate in Calligraphy introduced the sophisticated culture of writing Kanji using charcoal ink and the brush. The students learnt how important the mindfulness, concentration and correct posture in Calligraphy.
