It has become imperative for policy makers to take more seriously the value assumptions and conflicts connected to environmental issues or environmental philosophy. This presentation will emphasize that environmental problems have ethical dimensions – it will determine the practical relevance of ethical theories for environmental policy making and management. The fundamental question will then be the significance of ethics for the creation of a sustainable society. This question in turn resolves itself in several subsidiary questions:

  1. Do environmental issues have a moral dimension and, if so, in what sense?
  2. What values or ethical principles do environmental policy making and management rest upon?
  3. Are there alternatives to the values or ethical principles which are fundamental to existing environmental policy and management?
  4. Would the choice of such alternative values or ethical principles as a rational for decision making result in saliently different environmental policies and management?
