ELA Magazine: SPARK – Student-led Creative Collective
The English Literary Association (ELA) ventured into publication in 2019 by virtue of printing a new Magazine “Spark” as an addition to the previous monthly e-magazine. This was initiated to give a space for the creative writing skills of the students of the Department. Students can contribute by sending in their poems, short stories, essays and various other feature articles to the editor of SPARK. The magazine is a bi-annual publication.
The launch of the maiden publication of “SPARK” was held on the 31st of June 2019, during Dr Chitra Jayathilake as the Head of the Department, at the newly renovated Department of English and Linguistics premises of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The event was graced by the (former) Vice Chancellor (Senior Professor Sampath Amarathunga), the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Former heads of the department, academic, non-academic staff members and students. The launch attracted positive reactions from all parties present. Suggestions were given to expand the magazine beyond the Department of English and Linguistics and to cater to the creativity of the students of the entire university.
