Diploma in Information Technology

About the diploma
This diploma is run by the Department of Information and Communication Technology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. It takes one year, split into two semesters.
You learn the IT skills most workplaces ask for: office and productivity tools, computer hardware, networking, web development, data management, and programming in Python. You also complete a project of your own across both semesters.
When you finish, you receive an SLQF Level 3 qualification from a state university. You can use it to move forward at work or to continue into higher studies.
After the course, you will be able to
- Use everyday IT tools and methods to solve problems at work
- Explain IT ideas clearly when working with other people
- Look at a real work problem and figure out what is needed
- Choose the right tool or method for a task, and say why
- Build a working solution for a real problem and present it
Who can join
This diploma suits people who are already working and want an IT qualification, as well as students planning their next step. Most of our students are:
- Government and semi-government employees (executives, middle management, management assistants, field officers)
- Private sector and NGO employees
- Researchers and research assistants
- External degree candidates
- Undergraduates
Entry qualifications
You can apply if you have any one of these:
- Three Simple (S) passes at G.C.E. (A/L) in one sitting, or an equivalent qualification approved by the Senate
- An NVQ Level 04 (Advanced Certificate)
- Two Simple (S) passes at G.C.E. (A/L) plus 3 years of work experience
- A diploma worth 30 credits

A practical diploma for real jobs
The diploma takes one year. You learn practical IT skills and finish with your own project. Classes are held on weekends, so the course suits school leavers and people who are already working.
Weekend classes
On campus and online. Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Learn in your language
Taught in both English and Sinhala.
One year, recognised qualification
2 semesters. 30 credits. SLQF Level 3.
Who it suits
School leavers, Advanced Certificate holders, and working adults.
