Field Works

Institutional Visits

  • Experiments are reliable source of collecting primary data though, it facilitates to control effects of extraneous factors. Conducing experiments in a scientific manner ensure the collection of more accurate data and it is required well-developed methods of analysing those experimental data. Under the Design and Analysis of Experiments course unit undergraduates are educated how to perform an experiment methodologically and how to analyse data gathered suitably. In order to give a practical exposure to this course unit, the department organizing annual visit to the Field-crop Research Institute at Mahailuppallama where agricultural experiments are carried out adopting several statistical methodologies.
  • Undergraduates who follow Financial Management course unit visits Colombo Stock Exchange as a subject-related institutional visit. This annual institutional visit helps undergraduates to enhance practical knowledge and awareness towards stock exchange practices.
  • Though, quality control is one of the essential functions in any organization, there are important statistical techniques which were developed in order to facilitate quality control decision making process. In order to recognize the practical applications of theoretical knowledge in Statistical Quality Control, undergraduates visit to a selected leading manufacturing company annually. Few of the manufacturing companies are listed below:

Field Survey

  • Collecting primary data through a sample survey is one of the major actions in Statistics. For making better decision, educating students to select appropriate sampling technique and adopting suitable data collecting mechanism is vital. Under the Sample Survey Techniques course unit, undergraduates are asked to plan and conduct a sample survey annually with respect to a contemporary relevant research problem. These field surveys are important not only undergraduates to enhance their knowledge and skills towards planning, organizing and conducting sample surveys but also improving their soft skills such as leadership, team-working communication, organizing etc. Followings are some of the recent field surveys conducted related Sample Survey Techniques course unit:

  • Good understanding and skills of cleaning, organizing and analysing data is essential and undergraduates are required to report such data in a meaningful way. Data Analysis course unit ensures for fourth year undergraduates ensures this requirement. Undergraduates further should know how to analyse a complete dataset which is newly collected one relevant to a real-world problem. With this purpose, undergraduates have to plan and conduct comprehensive sample survey for selected research topic as a group work. This also helpful undergraduate to enhance their practical exposure to primary data collection and also improve their soft skills further.
