The Department of Music and Creative Technology was established in 2020, and is the first academic location in Sri Lanka to teach computerized music, which it did from 2004 when it was part of the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies (which later became the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts) of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The new department offers two degree programmes: BA (Hons) in Music and BA (Hons) in Creative Music Technology and Production. Therefore, it will be creating students who will get knowledge of both the traditional aspects of music and its newest formations, like the production of music through technology. Creativity will be nurtured both in performing artists and in the music composers. Also, they will be trained as scholars pursuing a passion for research and innovation. With the training given here, they will be able to shine as performers of music, both instrumental and vocal, and also have a skill set in technology dealing with music and video production, that will enable them to be employable anywhere in the world.
