Department of Sociology
Department of Sociology is one of the oldest and the largest department in the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The department celebrated its 50th anniversary in March 2010. The history itself is evidence of its dedication to the advancement of academic and research knowledge in Sri Lanka. In addition to the special degree programs, the Department offers general degrees and postgraduate diploma/degrees and certificate courses in these two disciplines. The national importance of these degree programs has created a healthy competition among undergraduates to enroll them and obtain higher qualifications in tertiary education.

The Department of Sociology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura is a top-performing academic unit known for its social research studies. It offers two honors degree programs in sociology and social work, as well as postgraduate programs and extension courses. The department is a renowned center for teaching and research, providing a unique perspective on social life. It offers numerous extracurricular activities to produce graduates with broad knowledge, higher-level skills, positive attitudes, and mental resilience. Located in a semi-urban area near Colombo’s commercial hub and administrative centers, the university provides a vibrant mix of theoretical and practical experiences.
