Aim and Scope

The Journal of Exploring Music (JEM) is an online, double-blind peer-reviewed journal published biannually by the Department of Music and Creative Technology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. It is envisioned as a scholarly platform dedicated to the dissemination of research and the promotion of interdisciplinary dialogue in music studies. The Journal aims to  support both emerging and established researchers by  publishing original research articles, review articles, analytical essays, fieldwork reports, interviews, book reviews, and case studies in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Ethnomusicology
  • Historical musicology
  • Music theory and analysis
  • Music performance studies
  • Music education and pedagogy
  • Music technology and production
  • Popular music studies
  • Cultural studies in music
  • Music and wellbeing
  • Music aesthetics and philosophy
  • Indigenous and traditional music studies
  • Film and media music studies

Language

Submissions must be written in clear and grammatically accurate English or Sinhala.

Review Process

  • Double-blind peer review
  • Minimum of two reviewers per submission
  • Turnaround time: approximately 8–12 weeks

Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines
Submissions to JEM must conform to the following guidelines:

A. Manuscript Types
  • Research Articles (4,000–8,000 words)
  • Review Articles (up to 8,000 words)
  • Field Reports / Case Studies (3,000–5,000 words)
  • Recording/Performance Reviews (2,000–4,000 words)

B. Manuscript Format

  • MS Word format (.doc or .docx)
  • Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced
  • 2.54 cm (1 inch) margins on all sides
  • Page numbers at bottom right
  • Title page including:
     o Title of the article
     o Author name(s)
     o Institutional affiliation(s)
     o Corresponding author’s email
     o ORCID ID (if available)
  • Main document anonymized for peer review

C. Abstract
Abstract must be a concise writing of introduction, methodology, findings and conclusions
    • 200–250 words
    • Keywords: 4–6 keywords, separated by commas

D. Referencing Style
    • APA 7th edition
    • In-text citations: (Author, year, p. xx)
    • Reference list in alphabetical order

   • Work must be original and unpublished
   • Authors are responsible for securing copyright permissions for images, figures, and media
H. Submission
   • Please submit articles via email to jem@sjp.ac.lk or below submission button.
   • Include “Submission – JEM” in the subject line.
   • Name your article as “Author Name_ Title” format
