A Practical Workshop on Comparative Osteology

The Department of Anthropology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized A Practical Workshop on Comparative Osteology on 16 October 2026. The session took place from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Physical Anthropology Laboratory of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The workshop was led by Dr. Alejandra Duarte, a primatologist at the National School of Anthropology and History, Mexico. Dr. Duarte’s work in primatology and skeletal anatomy made her well suited to guide participants through the comparative study of bone morphology, a core method in biological anthropology.

Comparative osteology examines the skeletal structures of different species, and of different populations within a species, to understand variation, function, and evolutionary relationships. The practical format of the session gave participants hands-on engagement with osteological material and the analytical approaches used in the field.

The workshop reflects the Department’s continuing commitment to strengthening teaching and research in physical anthropology, and to creating opportunities for students and staff to learn directly from international scholars. The Department extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Duarte for sharing her expertise, and to all participants and colleagues who contributed to the success of the event.
