Elevate 2.2 – Workshop on Employment Preperation Strategies Was Proudly Conducted with the Collaboration of Unilever

The second event of the Elevate project: Elevate 2.2 – Workshop on Employment Preperation Strategies was proudly conducted on 20th March 2025 at the Sumanaga Auditorium. As the resource person Ms. Pumudi Munasinghe, Assistant Manager of Workforce Operations and Data Specialist at Unilever Sri Lanka Limited was joined. With her experties students were able to gain valuable insights on how to prepare themselves that match current industry practies. The event was consised two parts as CV preperation and interview preperation, hence, fourth year students of the department were able to have good understading in both aspects in order to ready them for upcoming internships.

Third-year Students Conducted a Field Survey in Embilipitiya

Third year undergraduates of the Department of Social Statistics conducted an annual field survey on 15th and 16th March 2025 in the Embilipitiya area related to the Sample Survey Techniques course unit. The field survey aims to give the practical experience of conducting a sample survey in the studied area under the supervision of academic staff members of the department.

Hence, the field survey was helpful for the undergraduates to develop their knowledge and skills related to data collection and organizing surveys and to improve their soft skills including leadership skills, team working skills, organizing skills, communication skills, etc.

DSS Community Gathered With Atlanthus 2025, the Welcome and Going Down Function

Atlanthus 2025, the Welcome and Going Down Function which was organized by the undergraduates of the Department of Social Statistics to welcome the second-year undergraduates and to farewell to out-final undergraduates held on the 12th of March 2025 at the University premise. Mr. Lasantha Nawarathna, the Head of the Department, the academic staff and the non-academic staff of the department, and all the undergraduates heartily joined this session.

Elevate 2.1 – Industry Talk and Alumni Panel Discussion Succesfully Hosted

Under the Elevate 2.0 project, the Statistics and Information Technology Association Organized an Event as Elevate 2.1 – Industry Talk and Alumni Panel Discussion on 27.02.2025 from 5 pm onwards. With an inspiring guest speaker, distinguished alumni, and 150+ enthusiastic students participating, the event was a powerhouse of insights and connections. Sanjaya Kommalage – Head of Business Systems 3PL Sri Lanka joined as the Industry Expert and four porud DSS alumni members who are working public and private sectors shared their experiences during the event.

A Field Survey was Conducted in Diyathalawa under the Data Analysis Course Unit

inal year undergraduates of the Department of Social Statistics conducted an annual field survey on 12th and 13th February 2025 in the Diyathalawa area related to the Data Analysis course unit. The field survey aims to collect primary data regarding problems facing cutting flower and vegetable farmers in the studied area under the supervision of academic staff members of the department.

Moreover, the field survey was helpful for the undergraduates to develop their knowledge and skills related to data collection and organizing surveys and to improve their soft skills including leadership skills, team working skills, organizing skills, communication skills, etc.

Fourth-year Students Visited Gannoruwa Horticulture Research and Development Institute

In relation to the Design and Analysis of Experiments course unit, fourth-year undergraduates of the Department of Social Statistics visited Gannoruwa Horticulture Research and Development Institute (HORDI) on the 11th February, 2025. During the visit, undergraduates were able to gain an understanding of applying various experimental designs such as CRD and RBD in agricultural experiments.

Workshop on ARDL Modeling Was Succesfully Conducted

The Department of Social Statistics conducted a workshop on ARDL Modeling on 28th January, 2025 from 3 p.m. onwards at the Department Computer Laboratory for the fourth year students of the department. Senior Lecturer, Mr. Lasantha Nawarathna was the resource person of this workshop and this workshop was organized under the Knowlege Nexus program of the department.

AGM and Get Together of Alumni Members of DSS Was Successfully Conducted

The Annual General Meeting and Get Together of the Alumni Association of the Department of Social Statistics – USJ was held on 14th December 2024 from 10 a.m. onwards at the Sumangala Building. In parallel to AGM, the Annual General Meeting of the Foundation of Eduru Stanely Silva was also hosted on this occasion. Third-year Students Organized a Field Sruvey in Saliyawewa Area

Under the Research Methodology course unit, third-year students of the DSS conducted a field survey on 5th of November 2024 in Saliyawewa area. This field survey was helpful on real-world understanding of the conduction of a sample survey in the field.

Vidumaga Arunalu Was Successfully Conducted at Naramanakotuwa Primary School

Vidumaga Arunalu 2024, the annual social service project organized by the Students’ Association of the Department of Social Statistics was conducted on 04th of November 2024 at Naramanakotuwa Primary School, Mahawa Educational Zone. This project aimed to develop schools with low facilities and thereby, encourage the students who study under difficult conditions.
