This unit was established in 2010 under the direct supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Modern Languages had been a major component in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (formally known as the Faculty of Arts) ever since its inception in 1959 until I970. Modern languages like Japanese and Chinese were taught under the Faculty of Languages during this period. However teaching of these languages disappeared from the university curriculum due to various reforms introduced from time to time. Employability of graduates is one of the main concerns of the higher education policy of the government of Sri Lanka. The faculty also realizing the importance of this aspect has introduced
a number of measures to increase the employability of graduates.
