On 20 March 2026, in celebration of the International Day of La Francophonie, students of French from the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts proudly welcomed Her Excellency Ms. Isabelle Martin, High Commissioner of Canada, and Mr. Patrick Pickering, Second Secretary at the High Commission of Canada, for a memorable visit. The event fostered a rich cultural and academic exchange. The program began at 10:30 AM with a warm welcome, followed by an engaging session where Her Excellency shared insights on the role of French in diplomacy, global relations, and education. A key highlight was the generous donation of books by the Canadian High Commission, supporting French students’ language learning and cultural knowledge. An interactive discussion encouraged students to explore opportunities in the Francophone world. The event concluded successfully, leaving participants inspired and reinforcing the importance of French language, culture, and international collaboration.

On the 11th of March 2025 she shared her experiences teaching Japanese to the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The audience Included the Deputy Chief, Mr. Takuma Noguchi of JICA Sri Lanka, Ms. Sasika Liyanage, the director of Overseas Education- Ministry of Higher Education, Prof. Shiraantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and officers from the JICA Sri Lanka office, Deputy Registrar of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, academic staff of the Japanese section and the Japanese students representing all four batches.


During his opening remarks Prof Heenkenda commended Ms. Honda’s excellent work not only in teaching Japanese to the students but also by serving as a role model in introducing Japanese culture and work ethics to the university students. Mr. Noguchi highlighted that it has been 60 years since the JICA Volunteer programme was introduced to Sri Lanka and the volunteers have been warmly welcomed by the people. Starting from the dispatch of Ms. Sakiko Honda, new relationship has been established between Sri Jayewardenepura University and Japan.


Talking about her experiences at the university, Ms. Sakiko Honda emphasized that she had many positive experiences at the university of Sri Jayewardenepura where she made efforts to implement new teaching materials and methods.
Ms. Liyanage also expressed appreciation for Ms. Sakiko Honda’s outstanding work. Students too got a chance to talk about new learning experiences they had with Ms. Sakiko.


On 17th March, faculty members of the Department of Language, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts along with Prof Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the faculty of Huminite s and Social Sciences and Ms. Samantha Geeganage, Deputy Registrar of the faulty bid heartfelt farewell to Ms. Sakiko Honda wishing best for her future endeavors.

Organized by the five language student associations within the Department, the festival celebrated the rich and diverse cultural food heritage of French, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, and Sanskrit languages.

The food fiesta as a part of the continuous assessments and the active learning experience of the university students was aimed to promote cultural exchange and understanding through the sharing of food and provided a valuable opportunity for students and staff to immerse themselves in and appreciate the food and drinks of various cultures. Headed by Prof. Nilanthi Rajapakshe, the event was coordinated by Senior Lecturers Rev. Under the expert guidance of the organizers, Directress Cécile Hoorelbeke and the Academic Coordinator, Ms. Samantha de S. Wijeyeratne, of Alliance française de Colombo, the workshops featured presentations on La Francophonie, insights into the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Games, and discussions about the Alliance française network and Campus France – Educational Consultation Bureau. The Students from Sri Jayawardenapura, Kelaniya and Rajarata Universities engaged in a variety of activities aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of French language and culture and had the opportunity to immerse themselves in French cinema with screenings of short films followed by insightful discussions. The workshops also included engaging library activities and creative sessions inspired by the theme and 10 words for 2024. The success of these workshops underscores the growing interest and enthusiasm for French language and culture among students in Sri Lanka, reinforcing the importance of initiatives like Francophone Week in promoting linguistic diversity and cultural exchange on a global scale. This event was coordinated by the French lecturers, Ms.Charitha Liyanage and Ms.Pamudini Abeysekera.

The Head of the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies, and Performing Arts, Prof. Nilanthi Rajapakshe, along with Dr. Wajira Gunasena, Senior lecturer in Hindi and Ms. Aswini Perera, Assistant lecturer in Hindi and twenty seven Hindi students actively took part in this event. The Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka and Mr.Ankuran Dutta, Director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre were the chief guests. The cultural program featured impressive dance and singing performances by students from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, showcasing the beauty of Hindi arts. Certificates were given to the participating students for their excellent performances. At the same time, a Hindi Research Conference took place. Prof. Nilanthi Rajapakshe and Prof. Upul Hewawithatna chaired the first session, and alumni Sarasi Ranasinghe and Sinali Pathirana presented interesting papers, contributing to the academic discussion. The celebration also included immersive Hindi language practice sessions and a delicious experience of tasting Indian food. This fostered language exchange and appreciation for each other’s cultures. The event not only strengthened cultural ties but also provided a lively platform for academic discussions and artistic expression, symbolizing the lasting connection between Sri Lanka and India.

Their academic plans were discussed with the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, attended by Professor Nilanthi Rajapakshe Head of the Department, and French lecturer Ms. Charitha Liyanage. The scholarship recipients expressed gratitude for this valuable academic opportunity to explore French Language and Culture. Special thanks are offered to the Senior lecturer in French Irosha Chandrasekera, Olivia Bellemère, Cultural Counsellor and Thomas Bellil Attaché for Education of the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and Maldives for the extended support.
