Designed as a dedicated space for all students, the English Learning Zone provides a vibrant environment to enhance English language skills through reading and collaborative learning. A key feature of the initiative is “Basha Buddies”, a peer-learning program where students proficient in English assist their peers in improving language competency, creating a culture of mutual learning and support.

The launch was held with the participation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Deans of all ten faculties (Humanities and Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, Management Studies and Commerce, Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Computing, and Urban and Aquatic Bioresources), highlighting the importance of improving English proficiency across disciplines.

This new space is expected to become a hub for language development, offering students opportunities to engage actively in improving their English in a supportive and resource-rich environment.

The event held on 13^th February 2025 featured Ms. Kaushalya Fernando, a distinguished English language teacher and Sri Lankan actress, as the chief guest. She conducted an engaging and interactive session incorporating music and physical activities to enhance personality development skills such as confidence, voice projection and body language. The students actively participated and enjoyed the session, making it a memorable and enriching experience.

The assembly concluded with the class presidents and vice-presidents of the English Language Society (ELS) delivering their speeches, overcoming stage fright and gaining public speaking experience.

The event served as a valuable platform for students to enhance their confidence, communication skills, and sense of community within the English language programme.

The assembly showcased performances of Groups 4, 5, and 6, each delivering breathtaking acts, including group singing, drama, dance, and speeches. The students’ creativity shone through, especially in their fusion of diverse musical and dance genres, seamlessly intertwined with the English language.

This event served as an excellent platform for students to experience the power of creativity, dedication, and teamwork—rewarding them with confidence, joy, and a deep sense of accomplishment.

The Diploma in English course is recognised under the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Level 3 and the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 5, and the Certificate in English course, on the other hand, is acknowledged at SLQF Level 1 and NVQ Level 3. These courses are tailored for individuals seeking a vocationally and academically recognised professional qualification in English or those wishing to enhance their language skills.

Lectures are delivered in state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with advanced learning facilities by a team of qualified and experienced lecturers who are committed to helping students achieve their academic and professional goals.
